Early Life

Thomas Bangalter was born on January 3, 1975, in Paris, France, into a musical family; his father, Daniel Vangarde, was a noted composer and producer. Bangalter began playing piano at age six and met his future musical partner, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, at school around age twelve.

Career

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo formed an indie rock band called Darlin’ in 1992, which disbanded after a critic described their sound as “a daft punky thrash,” a phrase that inspired the name of their next project, Daft Punk, formed in 1993. The duo’s 1997 debut album, “Homework,” featuring hits “Da Funk” and “Around the World,” launched them to international fame, and they went on to release “Discovery” (2001), “Human After All” (2005), and “Random Access Memories” (2013), the latter featuring “Get Lucky,” which sold more than 10 million copies.

Their Alive 2007 tour alone grossed more than $35 million, and Bangalter also founded the record label Roulé, composed film scores including “Tron: Legacy” and “Irréversible,” and co-directed the animated film “Interstella 5555.” After Daft Punk split in 2021, Bangalter shifted toward composing modern classical music, releasing work through a new label called Alberts & Gothmaan and premiering a ballet score, “Mythologies,” in 2023.
